Aarnja is a Kimberley regional peak Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisation based in Broome. Rather than delivering frontline services, it works as an interface, secretariat and facilitation body between governments, Aboriginal communities, service providers and leaders. Its mission is to work with all parties to create innovative and sustainable opportunities that empower Kimberley Aboriginal people, communities and organisations to hold a strong Aboriginal identity and share in the social and economic opportunities of modern society. Aarnja prioritises children and young people, including reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal children in out-of-home care and building Aboriginal youth leadership across the region.
Who we are
Aarnja describes itself as a Kimberley regional peak Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisation. It is not a direct service provider; instead it serves as an interface, secretariat and facilitation body between governments and Aboriginal communities, service providers and leaders, collaborating on policy and program development. Its stated mission is to work with all parties to create innovative and sustainable opportunities that empower Kimberley Aboriginal people. A strong focus is children and young people, including addressing the over-representation of Aboriginal children in the out-of-home care system and developing the leadership potential of Aboriginal youth. Recent work includes the Aboriginal Representative Organisation pilot, ensuring Aboriginal organisations are consulted on child placement and cultural support planning, and the Kimberley Aboriginal Children in Care Project, which works with the Kimberley Aboriginal Children in Care Committee to identify systemic gaps and make recommendations.
