Wirraka Maya Health Service Aboriginal Corporation is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service based in South Hedland, serving Port Hedland and surrounding Pilbara communities. The name, given by the Kariyarra Traditional Owners, means 'sick house'. Wirraka Maya provides comprehensive primary health care alongside chronic disease management, maternal and child health, sexual health, dental, allied health and visiting specialists, pharmacy support, and social and emotional wellbeing counselling and psychology. It also delivers NDIS support, community outreach and health promotion, and operates as a Registered Training Organisation. Care is bulk-billed, meeting clients' medical, health, social and cultural needs.
Who we are
Wirraka Maya Health Service Aboriginal Corporation is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service in South Hedland that has served the Pilbara since commencing operations in 1993. Established through the efforts of local Aboriginal volunteers, it was renamed by the Kariyarra Traditional Owners in 1997, with 'Wirraka' meaning 'sick' and 'Maya' meaning 'house'. Wirraka Maya delivers holistic, culturally safe primary health care to Aboriginal people in Port Hedland, South Hedland and surrounding communities, including outreach to Warralong, Strelley, Yandeyarra and Marble Bar. Its team of Aboriginal Health Workers and Practitioners, GPs, nurses, visiting specialists and allied health practitioners provides chronic disease management, maternal and child health, sexual health, dental, pharmacy, and social and emotional wellbeing counselling and psychology, plus NDIS support. As a Registered Training Organisation it also builds the Aboriginal health workforce. Services are bulk-billed so clients are not charged.
