Wungening Aboriginal Corporation
Wungening Aboriginal Corporation is an Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisation providing culturally secure, holistic services to Aboriginal people across the Perth metropolitan area. Founded in 1988 as the Noongar Alcohol and Substance Abuse Service, the first Aboriginal-owned alcohol and other drug service in Perth, it adopted the name Wungening (meaning healing in Noongar) in 2017. The organisation helps community members heal their body, mind and spirit through alcohol and other drug programs, family support, family and domestic violence services, foster care, housing and homelessness assistance, justice programs and crisis support, grounded in Aboriginal ways of knowing, being and doing.
Who we are
Wungening is an Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisation that delivers confidential, culturally secure and holistic support to Aboriginal people in the Perth metropolitan area. It began in 1988 when around forty local Aboriginal people gathered to address gaps in mainstream services for community members affected by alcohol and substance misuse, forming the Noongar Alcohol and Substance Abuse Service. Over the following decades it expanded its programs, was renamed the Aboriginal Alcohol and Drug Service in 2005, and rebranded as Wungening in 2017. Today it operates from multiple hubs across Perth, including East Perth, Armadale, Midland, Mirrabooka and Rockingham. Its work centres on Aboriginal ways of knowing, being and doing, drawing on the lived experience of staff and community, and spans alcohol and other drug support, family and child services, justice programs, housing and crisis support to help people heal in body, mind and spirit.
