West Kimberley Futures Empowered Communities

West Kimberley Futures / Empowered Communities West Kimberley (EC-West) is an Aboriginal-led organisation supporting community empowerment across Broome, Derby, Fitzroy and surrounding communities as part of the national Empowered Communities initiative. Its role is to ensure effective collaboration between Aboriginal community members, government agencies and stakeholders through respectful facilitation, authentic co-design and purposeful advocacy. EC-West staff do not function as decision-makers; instead they bring people together for inclusive design and joint decision-making, so that decisions about West Kimberley Aboriginal people do not happen without them. The organisation facilitates joint decision making, amplifies community voices to government in partnership with the National Indigenous Australians Agency, and provides secretariat support to working groups and committees. Key initiatives include Empowered Young Leaders, integrated family empowerment services, Local Management Committees across four regions, and co-designing a Kimberley Aboriginal Regional Body. It uses shared learning and reflective practice for monitoring and improvement.
