Cultural Security Framework Launch Event

The Department of Justice has partnered with CASWA, to launch Western Australia’s first Cultural Security Framework for youth detention.

Co-designed with young people in detention, Aboriginal leaders, community members across the State, and more than 250 staff from the Young People Directorate, the framework is the first of its kind within Justice and represents a commitment to meaningful change.

CASWA Chairperson Chris Bin Kali added, “When young people leave detention, we hope they will carry a renewed sense of hope and belonging, strengthened by culture and supported by their families as they take their next steps toward a positive future.”

CASWA shares the belief that culture is innate to Aboriginal people and provides the life force and strength for young people as they journey from childhood to adulthood. For young people entering youth detention, culture can provide a compass for identity, connection and healing, strengthening resilience and supporting positive development.

We all have a role to play in being accountable and taking responsibility to improve outcomes for young people in youth detention. We look forward to seeing the implementation of the framework.
